What is a Host ... ?

A host is a company that stores your html doc's and images, that will be seen by others on the internet. There are many ways to get a host. Some ISP (Internet Service Providers)  will include few megs of space on their server for you to put a a web site, but the address people will have to type to get to the site is for the most part set out like this ..www.yourISP'S_Name/~YourUserName.com If you are looking for a Domain name for your company  i.e.: www.YourCompanyName.com   you will need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Providers) on how much they will charge you for setup and fees. The other way is to use a stand alone service host provider. Stand alone Service Providers do not let you connect your computer to the internet. They just store your HTML and Graphic doc's to be displayed on the internet. One good thing about this is that you can access your Email and website with any ISP (Internet Service Providers) . So if you happen to change your ISP (Internet Service Providers) say from AOL.COM  to MSN.COM you will not have to change your site host or emails.

How many hours to build a basic website ... ?

Well I wish I could nail that down for you, but it can not be set to a time frame. You must factor in clients impute and changes to meet the clients needs. Remember after getting our clients need and wants then setting them to the web, there can be ..ah well lets just say difference of opinion on how it turned out. But that's fine we understand this and expect this to happen. Most of the sites took 3 or 4 versions to set it the way the clients wanted. That is why we have the package pricing. With-in limits you do not go to the hourly rates on a package plain until you are happy with the set-up of the site. This lets you adjust the site to your needs. But for the most part I would say we put 50 to 100 hours into nailing down a site design and layout to meet a clients needs. And if you think about  setting up a site paying by the hour that's about $1750 - $3500. We feel our package rates are a great savings for our clients.
